Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told US President Donald Trub that his country would not tolerate Kurdish fighters from Syria in the region, without commenting on the US decision to equip them. At the meeting of the two White House leaders, Tramp described Erdogan as an important ally "in the fight against terrorism" without mentioning the pressing domestic political situation in Turkey after the failed coup of last July. "We have a good relationship and we will make it even better," Trab said during their joint show.
Erdogan on the side welcomed the "excellent relations" between the two countries, stressing that this visit would be a "historic shift" in Turkey's relations with the US. The meeting of the two Presidents was held in a positive tone, according to Washington observers, given the reactions that Turkey has made to Washington's decision to equip the Kurdish militants of Syria (YPG) whom Ankara views as an extension of the law Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
