Turkey: The cabinet meets in SE Turkey
Clashes raged yesterday between Turkish security forces and Kurdish militants in southeastern Turkey, the Turkish government convened in the troubled region to discuss ways of remedying the dissolved economy of this part of the country. A car bomb hit a police base in Diyarbakir province, killing one soldier and injuring another 20, a few hours after the cabinet stopped its operations in neighboring Sanliurfa, said police sources.
The Turkish military said that 39 members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) were killed in clashes in four cities over the weekend, adding more dead in a set which has risen sharply since the collapse of the ceasefire in July 2015.
Ahmet Davutoglu Prime Minister chaired the first session outside Ankara in 2003 in Sanliurfa. While the city is located in southeastern Turkey, until now had escaped the violence that has occurred in other parts of the region. The ministers were expected to discuss urban renewal plans after months of fighting in towns and cities in the mainly Kurdish region of Turkey.
