At least 95,000 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum
At least 95,000 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum in Europe in 2015, according to a survey of British Bureau of Investigative Journalism, which points out that this figure is four times higher than for 2014.
The number is much higher than previous estimates, although only 17 countries provided relevant data. Sweden recorded the largest number of asylum applications by unaccompanied minors in 2015-35369. Followed by Germany with 14 439, Austria in 9331 and Hungary in 8804. Eurostat also expected to publish its own data later this year.
These findings, however, raises serious questions, not only about the ability of countries to respond to immigration / refugee flows, but also in relation to the welfare of these children and their uncertain future.
The representative of Unicef told Euobserver that this year continues the increased inflows of unaccompanied minors, at least in Greece, and within the first eleven weeks of this year, 1,156 unaccompanied minors were registered by the Greek authorities.
