Nine Cubans drowned in the trip to the US
Nine Cuban migrants drowned at sea in trying to reach the coast of Florida in the United States of America, as reported by survivors of the forces of the US Coast Guard.
The 18 survivors suffering from "severe dehydration", reported to the authorities that "nine migrants drowned at sea" during their journey started from the coast of Cuba, 22 days ago.
Immigrants originally rescued by a cruise ship near Marco Island in Florida, said the announcement of the Coast Guard. They will remain until they board a ship to be promoted back to Cozumel Island Mexico, completed by the authorities.
"Immigration policy has not changed and we urge people not to attempt journeys by sea in unseaworthy vessels," said chief coastguard Mark Gordon in the statement. "It is illegal and extremely dangerous," he added, according to the Athens Press Agency.
In January, the US Coast Guard recorded a "steady increase" in the number of Cubans attempting to reach by sea to the US.
Under US law, under specific immigration policy that gives immigrants from Cuba preferential treatment, those who enter by land to the US, they are allowed to enter the country and apply for a residence permit.
Many Cubans but immigrants fear that the thaw in relations between Washington and Havana will result in tightening of immigration policy and the termination of the special immigration status.
According to the American Institute Pew Research Center, which cites government data, 27 296 Cubans entered the United States between September 2014 and June 2015, a rapid increase of 78% in one year.
Last week the US announced that even more relax trade and travel restrictions on Cuba.
The new measures decided a few days before the historic visit that will carry out in Cuba, US President Barack Obama on 21 and 22 March, the first visit of the US president on the island from 1928.
The Obama administration started in January 2015 to relax the sanctions imposed on Cuba before half a century after the restoration of diplomatic relations with Washington Havana.
