France: Five arrests on charges of attacks against refugees in Calais


The French police arrested five men allegedly were making attacks on refugees in Calais, disguised as policemen.

The suspects, aged 18 to 48 years, held from Wednesday and under indictment in the night of 20 to 21 January attacked three Syrian close to the train station of Calais. According to a police source, used in their attacks "iron crowbars and pickaxes handles".

The men "tried not to leave traces of their attacks" and have not confessed that disguised police officers, but "some of them admitted that during the attacks shouting 'Police' and used batons," the source said, adding that all five alleged perpetrators "have conducted more than one attacking refugees in Calais."

At the same time they admitted that they attacked a 13 year old boy one hour before the attack on the three Syrians in January.

"In most of the attacks, the perpetrators not only beat their victims, but stole their personal belongings, such as laptops," said the police source.

Those arrested denied the theft, but one of the Syrians, the victim of the attack the night of January 20, complained that he got 4,000 euros.
