Emine Erdogan: The harem was for school female life
H wife of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Emine, said the Ottoman harem constituted "a school to prepare women for life."
"The harem was a school for members of the Ottoman dynasty and an educational institution to prepare women in life," said the First Lady of Turkey during a public placement in Ankara which was broadcast by television networks in the country.
Like her husband, the Emine Erdogan is faithful Muslim and does not hide his admiration for the power of the Ottoman Empire.
The position expressed about harems sparked criticism on social networking sites.
"At the time of Murad III (Sultan of the 16th century) the unique items that have not entered the harem were the books" pointed the social networking site Twitter to Ezlem Kouroumlar a university.
