Demonstrations in Brazil to request the resignation of Rousseff and the arrest of predecessor

Demonstrations broke out in several cities of Brazil yesterday, following the decision of President Dilma Rousseff, to appoint her predecessor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to the post of chief of staff of the government. The move is estimated to protect the former president from any criminal prosecution. In the capital, Brasilia, police used pepper spray to disperse a protest of 5,000 people outside the presidential palace, and the Congressional building. Protesters held banners and demanded the resignation of the president, and the arrest of Lula.

Thousands more protesters gathered in the city of Sao Paulo, the financial center of Brazil, after large protests Sunday, with the participation of more than one million demonstrators, who demanded the resignation of Rousseff.
