Macedonia can receive a maximum of 2,000 refugees
Macedonia can receive a maximum of 2,000 refugees, said Chairman Georgi Ivanov, in reaction to the announcement of the EU to create 100,000 slots for refugees in Greece and the Balkans in general to address the refugee crisis.
"The reception capacity of FYROM amounts to a maximum of 2,000 refugees with the help of UNHCR and the Red Cross," said Ivanov in Brussels in Macedonian media journalists, which reported today's statements.
Macedonia "may be only a transit country, is unable to accommodate a large number of refugees on its territory if closed corridors" makers refugees to arrive in Western Europe, stated Ivanov.
"We are cooperative, but as a transit country, not as a place where migrants would stay long term. We hope that the border will not close," added the president of Macedonia, according to the Athens agency.
He also said he favors an effective "information exchange" between his country and Greece to improve the management of the refugee crisis.
Yesterday, in a joint statement by the participants in mini-summit 10 EU Member States (Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Romania and Slovenia) as well as three countries not belonging to the EU (Albania, Macedonia and Serbia) committed to implement today already 17 steps to "restore order" at EU borders and "slowing the uncontrolled influx of persons."
