 Gabriel: Europe shames herself with the immigration crisis

H European Union appears in a "very awkward and uncomfortable" position with the way it manages the immigration crisis, said today Vice Minister of Germany and the country's Economy, Sigmar Gabriel.

Speaking to reporters in Cologne Gabriel said it is problematic that some countries decided to actively participate in crisis response plan when they acquired material gain and not involved during tough times.

Yesterday, the Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel has stated that if Member States of the European Union fail to agree on a fair distribution of refugees, the Schengen zone will be called into question.

Gabriel noted that such a result would be a huge blow for the EU.

"To abandon the open borders would be a giant step backwards in the history of Europe," he said in separate statements made in newspaper WestDeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung underlining inter alia that "Europe is now in danger of losing its
