France plans to "create hotspots this summer in Libya", asylum seekers, announced today President Emmanuel Makron.
"The idea is to create hotspots in Libya so people avoid the imminent risks as they are not all eligible for asylum. People, we will be looking for them. I have been expecting this to happen this summer, "with or without Europe, he added, on the sidelines of a visit to a temporary refugee center in Orleans (central France).
"I want to send offshore missions to the Italian hotspots and I am ready to send missions to Libya," he said, while referring to the possibility of setting up such centers in Niger.
"The other European countries are very cautious, we will try to do it with Europe, but we, France, will do that," he added.
"But there must be appropriate safety conditions that are not present today," said Makron, explaining that "the purpose is to ensure pre-handling of requests instead of letting people cross the Mediterranean at the risk of their lives ".
"We have 800,000 to one million people in Libya, in camps, in sheds, it does not even show the slightest humanity," the president said, stressing the need to "stabilize Libya."
