Brazil: 90% say he does not trust President Temer

The popularity of Brazilian President Michel Temer has fallen to 5 percent, according to a poll released today, one week before the crucial vote to be held in parliament to refer him to a corruption trial.

This poll shows that seven out of ten Brazilians (70%) believe that the Temer rule is "bad or disgusting". This is the highest rate recorded since 1985 and the return of democracy to the largest country in Latin America.

Last March, the popularity of Temer was 10%, and 55% of respondents considered "bad" how it was governed. Today, 90% of the respondents said they have no confidence in the president, whose term expires (theoretically) at the end of 2018.

Temer assumed the presidency in June 2016 after Dilma Rousseff's retirement from office. His popularity rate not only never picked up, but instead was as long as the months passed.

After 13 years of governance by the left-wing Labor Party, the conservative president promoted liberal reforms to get Brazil out of the recession. But like many other politicians and high-ranking officials, he was also involved in the corruption scandal centered on Petrobras, a state oil company.

Next Wednesday, parliament will be asked to give the green light to bring Temer to the Supreme Court.

The poll was conducted from 13 June to 1 July on a representative sample of 2,000 people.
