The History page turns: In Cuba Barack Obama

US President Barack Obama is preparing today to turn a page of history with his visit to Cuba, one of the last bastions of communism with which he intends to put an end to more than five decades of hostility.

When today arrived around 17:00 (local time, 23:00 GMT) in the Jose Marti airport in Havana, Obama will become the first active American leader to visit the island after the visit of Calvin Coolidge in 1928.

Accompanied by his wife Michelle and their two daughters Malia and Sasha, Obama seeks his visit is a dual purpose: to make contact with the Cuban people and stabilize the spectacular approach that began in late 2014 with Cuba Raul Castro.

The US president, who will move then to Argentina, also wants to improve the country's image in Latin America - an image that has been tarnished by the US interventions in what they considered their yard.

In this regard, the old Cuban enemy is the perfect symbol of a new relationship with the subcontinent and, currently completing his second term as President, Obama wants to move as much as possible in this effort to make any setback difficult, whoever will be his successor in 2017.

This is the goal that has led the White House to declare the last few months a series of measures to relax the embargo imposed on the island since 1962 and the complete elimination of which depends on Congress.

The Starwood hotel chain announced yesterday night that got the green light from the Finance Ministry to open two hotels in Havana. becoming the first American multinational installed in Cuba after the revolution of Fidel Castro in 1959.
