USA: Muslim organization offices evacuated after a threatening letter
The headquarters of an organization that supports the rights of American Muslims were evacuated on Capitol Hill in Washington today when staff received a letter containing a white powder, but preliminary tests showed that the substance was harmless.
The letter sent to the Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), and contained a note saying, "To die a painful death, Muslims," according to the lawyer of the organization Maha Sayed. "Our fear is soaring this time, given the anti-Muslim statements that sound," he said.
In northern California, a branch of CAIR in Santa Clara also evacuated today after a similar letter with an unknown powder, said spokesman Ibrahim Hooper of the organization, such as the Athens Press Agency reported.
Police and Muslim communities in the United States has prepared an anti-Muslim wave after attacking a pair of Muslims killed 14 people in California last week.
In California, three people handled dust isolated in the building while police and fire filled the room, said Hooper, adding that the rest of the staff was waiting on the sidewalk.
The Sayyed said that the organization receives hate messages on the website of the social website Facebook daily. "It's frightening to experience how intense the hatred manifested. This will not stop us from continuing to protect the civil rights and civil liberties of all Americans," he said.
The incident occurred a few days after the candidate for the Republican presidential nomination Donald Trump proposed a temporary ban on US Muslims, creating strong reactions in the country and worldwide.
