Saudi Arabia: A woman was elected in Mecca, in the first elections in which might involve women

A woman was elected in the region of Mecca (western Saudi Arabia) during the first elections in the ultraconservative kingdom of Saudi Arabia in which women were allowed to vote and stand for election, today announced the local Electoral Commission.

The Salma Ben Chizamp al-Oteimpi elected yesterday, Saturday, at the City Council Mantrakach, a location in the region of Mecca, the most sacred place of Islam, explained the chairman of the local election commission al-Bar Osama, announcing the first results of the municipal elections in Saudi news agency SPA.

All applicants claimed a seat in the 284 municipal councils, assemblies with limited powers are the only kingdom consisting of elected representatives.

In the periphery, the Bend Chizamp Salma al-Oteimpi opponents had seven men and two women, according to Osama al-Bar.
