Texas: At least 100,000 women have tried to do an abortion themselves

At least 100,000 women in Texas may have attempted to undergo an abortion themselves, according to the first study of its kind conducted by the University of the US this state.

The study finds that between 100,000 and 240,000 women have attempted to make their own abortion and that Texas leads the compared to other American states. Latinos and poor women are those, found refuge at a greater rate in this desperate practice.

One of the main stakeholders, according to the researchers, is the law that prohibits access to clinics where abortions are performed, while another is the availability of drugs that cause spontaneous abortion very close to Texas and specifically in the US-Mexico border.

Most respondents said that the most common method of abortion that chose was the use of drugs, while others made use of herbs or drugs used in alternative therapies, alcohol, illegal drugs or hormonal preparations or resorted to harsher methods, tapping or pinching the belly.

The study results follow the announcement by the US Supreme Court to uphold a case that challenges the constitutionality of a Texas law known as HB 2, which provides for stringent measures in the gynecological clinics that perform abortions thus leaving okokliri state Only 10 clinics for the 5.4 million women of childbearing age.

22% of the 779 respondents said they themselves or a woman they know has terminated or has attempted to terminate itself pregnancy outside medical facilities.

Also, 34% said they are against abortion, but to understand the reasons that can lead a woman to decide to terminate itself one pregnancy.

Dr. Daniel Grossman, professor at the department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, said in a press release that a more restrictive law could lead more women in seeking options outside medical facilities.

"As access to services of a clinical becoming more difficult in Texas, we can expect more women feel they have no choice but to take matters into their own hands," said Grossman.
