Extraordinary meeting of EU interior ministers Tuesday on immigration
The interior ministers of EU member states will urgently convene next Tuesday, September 22, to discuss immigration crisis, announced today in Luxembourg, as the session Monday reached an impasse.
Luxembourg, which holds the EU presidency for the current six months, said in a statement that it wishes the council of ministers to agree a mechanism for the relocation of 120,000 asylum seekers from their first entry countries, namely Greece, Italy and Hungary.
The issue has divided European countries since Western, led by Germany, are in favor of a transfer of refugees while the eastern react to the system of mandatory quotas has been proposed by the European Commission.
