The Iraqi Kurdish leader said today that the road to establishing an independent Kurdish state does not turn back, but added that it would seek to fulfill this purpose through dialogue with Baghdad and other forces in the region to avoid a conflict.
Massoud Barzani, the president of the autonomous regional government of Kurdistan, said in an interview with the Reuters news agency that the timetable for independence after the 25 September referendum would be "flexible," but the proclamation can not be postponed "on 'Indefinite'. Barzani anticipated the victory of "yes" in the referendum.
The referendum may lead to the creation of a new outbreak in the region, as Turkey, Iran and Syria, states that, like Iraq, have large Kurdish minorities, oppose the establishment of an independent Kurdish state in northern Iraq. But Barzani has allayed these concerns.
In Iraq, concerns are expressed that the real purpose of the referendum is not to secede Kurdistan but to strengthen Kurdish claims in disputed areas within the province, such as the oil-rich region and the city of Kirkuk, the future of which is In the last decade and more.
In Iraqi Kurdistan, parties such as the PUK of Jalal Talabani or the Gharan organization are in favor of independence, but not necessarily under the leadership of Barzani and the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP), of its membership.
