The US authorities today announced that they have issued 12 arrest warrants against security chiefs of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as they are suspected of attacking Kurdish protesters last month during a peaceful rally in Washington.
The bodyguards and members of the Turkish President's police guard were identified in a video where the clashes were recorded, said US Navy chief of police, Peter Newsweek.
The 12 men are accused of being involved in violent incidents that erupted on May 16th in the night before the residence of Turkey's ambassador, where the head of the Turkish state had gone after the meeting he had with the US President Donald Trump in the White House.
Newswam described the clashes between Erdogan's supporters and Kurdish protesters as "a violent attack on peaceful protesters." Twelve people were injured in the riots, including a police officer.
"In the US, and in Washington in particular, we believe that the right to peaceful demonstration is a sacred right," the police chief said today.
The Washington police have already prosecuted at least four suspects of Turkish origin, including two Americans and two Canadians.
