The European Parliament President Martin Schulz, who returns to the political scene of Germany, is not expected to be a candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) for the chancellorship next year, according to today's report in the online edition of Der Spiegel.
If confirmed the decision of Schultz is not a candidate, will pave the way for the president of the SPD Sigmar Gabriel, who is an opponent of conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel who will claim fourth term.
Parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held in Germany in September. The SPIEGEL, which however does not invoke any source, writes that Schultz hinted at close associates before Christmas that will not be the candidate of his party for the chancellery.
