Turkey: Arrests leaders and MPs of the pro-Kurdish HDP
The Turkish authorities arrested the two co-chairmen and nine other members of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Republic Party (HDP) Turkey before dawn today for refusing to give evidence for crimes related to "terrorist propaganda".
According to the Turkish Interior Ministry issued arrest orders for 13 members, but only 11 were kept, as the other two are abroad. Earlier, the party's lawyers have said that a total of 15 members in detention.
Turkish police raided the homes of co-chairs Selachantin Demirtas Ankara and Fiegen Giouksekntag in Diyarbakir, the largest city in the predominantly Kurdish southeastern region of Turkey, said the party's lawyers told Reuters agency.
"HDP called on the international community to react against the Erdogan regime coup", urged the party to a message on Twitter, referring to the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The police also raided the headquarters of the party in the center of Ankara, and conducted research. TV footage showing members of the party to quarrel with the police during the raid, and an eyewitness told Reuters that access to the road that the headquarters was blocked by several police cars and cars equipped.
A group of demonstrators chanting slogans tried to reach the party headquarters, but was prevented by the police before entering the road, according to a witness.
