The Popular Party of Rajoy is in the center of a major trial for corruption
The "trial of the Year" in Spain began today near Madrid, where former high officials of the ruling conservative party should give explanations to a sophisticated system of bribes and fake accounts, which embodies the rampant corruption in the country.
Two former treasurers of the Popular Party (PP) of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy among the main accused in this trial, which was carried out seven years after the first arrests were made.
"Thieves!», «Chorizos!» Chanted protesters at the arrival of the accused in the National Court (Audiencia Nacional) located in suburb of Madrid and has jurisdiction to hear political-economic affairs.
Altogether 37 persons --metaxy including a dozen elected officials and executives PP-- suspected of having participated in a broad network of embezzlement of public funds from 1999 to 2005 amounted to tens of millions of euros.
In the courtroom, Luis Barthenas was the one who was around most people: former treasurer of PP from 1988 to 2009, mainly accused hid abroad tens of millions of euros.
The defendant as the leader of the network, the businessman Francisco Korea seemed more isolated. The man was known before "Don Vito" --opos the mobster movie "The Godfather" - warned shortly before the trial that will talk about "everything he knew".
