Surprise visit of Pope Francis in Amatritse
Surprise visit to the inhabitants of the city Amatritse central Italy devastated by the earthquake on August 24, made by Pope Francis today, the Holy See announced.
The Pope had announced his intention to visit Amatritse few days after the earthquake that left behind 300 dead, but did not specify a precise date.
"I want to make this visit private, alone, as a priest, bishop and pope. But alone. So I want to do. And I want to be closer to the people, "he told reporters on Sunday night on the plane back from his trip to Georgia and Azerbaijan.
The pontiff arrived in town just after 9 in the morning and headed for the prefabricated school buildings that house approximately one hundred students after their refurbished school building collapsed in the earthquake overnight.
On Twitter Greg Burke, the Vatican spokesman, upload photos showing the Pope greets young students or squeezes the hands of a visibly excited man who lost his wife and children in the earthquake.
Then Pope Francis would be directed to the "red zone", which is closed to the public due to wall collapse risk.
Aftershocks continue to be felt in the area where the Italian government estimates the damage at EUR 4 billion, but has promised that communities that were destroyed will be rebuilt to make them just as they were before the disaster.
In the meantime, the 1800 earthquake are housed in tents or in hotels that are available to them in the region, according to the latest review of the Civil Protection service.
