The EP calls on Ankara to release the journalists who has imprisoned
The European Parliament today called on Turkey to release all journalists detained without evidence, underlining that the coup can not be used as a "pretext" to muzzle the press and the opposition.
In a decision adopted by the full European Parliament in Strasbourg, the body "calls on the Turkish authorities to release the journalists and media professionals held without irrefutable accusations of criminal activity."
MEPs believe that the failed coup attempt that took place in mid-July "can not serve as a pretext to the Turkish government to continue to silence the legitimate and peaceful opposition, or to prevent, by disproportionately and unfairly measures and actions, journalists and media from the peaceful exercise of their freedom to express themselves. "
Noting that the pressure exerted on journalists was already "significant" before the failed coup attempt, MEPs said that by July 15 the Turkish police closed the offices of more than 100 media and have arrested at least 99 journalists and writers.
"So the number of media professionals, detained for acts connected with the exercise of their right to freedom of expression, at least 130," according to MEPs.
The European Parliament calls on the Turkish authorities "to reduce the range of emergency measures that can no longer be used to hit the freedom of expression", as the state of emergency was extended in early October for three months.
