USA: Louisiana declared a disaster situation
The US President Barack Obama declared yesterday, Sunday, in a natural disaster situation the State of Louisiana, which was hit by floods which are unprecedented in the region and where at least five people died, while rescuers rescued more than 20,000 flood victims.
Governor John Bel Edwards said residents were rescued from cars that were swept away by the waters, from plmmyrismena homes and hospitals threatened throughout the southern part of the state. More rainfall expected from a storm system that extends from the shores of the Gulf of Mexico to the Ohio Valley.
Although mainly storm caused torrential rains, moving west to Texas, Louisiana residents should remain vigilant, said the governor in a press conference.
"Even if today we occasionally sunshine, the water will continue to rise in many areas, so we have to remain very cautious," said Edward, whereby these floods are unprecedented in Louisiana.
Obama declared the area a disaster situation he spoke with Edwards, said in a statement the White House. It thus becomes available federal aid for flood victims in various regions.
Edwards later said that more than 20,000 people were rescued from the floods in southern Louisiana.
About 5,000 people were forced to spend the night in shelters, said Marketa Walters, head of the Directorate Services for Children and Families of Louisiana.
Colonel of State Police Michael Entmonson said helicopters carrying food and water to people who are still trapped because of flooding. Helicopters also carry some serious patients from areas flooded.
Approximately 1,700 members of the National Guard of Louisiana developed to help in the rescue efforts.
At least five people died in Louisiana flood after themselves or vehicles that were aboard swept away by the rushing waters.
