Erdogan apologized to Moscow for breaking the Russian fighter
Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan wrote to apologize to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for shooting down a Russian fighter of the Turkish Air Force in November 2015 and called for "normalization of relations" between Moscow and Ankara announced today the Kremlin.
After shooting down Russian fighter in Turkey's border with Syria, Russia imposed a trade embargo in Ankara and President Putin has stated that the restrictions would not be lifted unless Erdogan apologized.
According to the announcement of the Kremlin, Putin received a letter from Erdogan that "the Turkish leader expressed his desire to resolve the situation associated with the shooting down of a Russian military aircraft".
"The letter notes in particular that Russia is a friend of Turkey and a strategic partner" and that the Turkish authorities did not want to spoil relations between the two countries, said the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov.
"The Turkish leader expressed sympathy and deepest condolences to the family of a Russian pilot who was killed and apologized," said Peskov said.
So far there is no reaction from Ankara on this issue.
