The Zoulfou Livaneli resigned as ambassador of UNESCO in protest disasters in Sur

The goodwill ambassador of Turkey to UNESCO, the UN agency for culture, resigned today accusing her of hypocrisy for ignoring the destruction of large parts of a space that belongs to the world heritage of mankind during clashes between the Turkish army and militants in southeastern Turkey where live mainly Kurds.

By Roman walls of basalt surround historic houses, churches, synagogues and mosques, the Sur district of Diyarbakir city was included in July 2015 on the list of World Heritage established by UNESCO. Weeks later, a truce with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) collapsed and rekindled the armed campaign.

Sour occurred in some of the fiercest battles since December the army has ruled the world.
