Lifting the arms embargo on Vietnam announced Mn. Obama
US President Barack Obama announced today in Hanoi to lift the embargo on US arms sales to Vietnam, one of the last remnants of war between the two countries that ended in 1975. "The US lift the ban," Obama said at the press conference on the first day of his visit to Vietnam, with which the US worked on a spectacular approach for 20 years.
"The decision to remove is not stimulated by the Chinese theme (...) but our will to complete the long process of normalization followed by Vietnam," added Obama. "Every sale you make any considered a particular transaction and we are considering what is appropriate and what is not," he explained.
In late 2104, the Obama administration had allowed the partial lifting of the embargo on armaments "only to be used in maritime security", such as patrol boats. "Highly appreciate the decision to abolish completely the embargo on arms to Vietnam," said the country's president Tran Dai Quang. "This shows that the relations between our two countries are fully normalized."
This announcement is a signal to Beijing, which shows more and more teeth in South Sinica Sea, where Vietnam and China claiming some islands. In 1994, the US lifted the economic embargo and the two countries normalize their diplomatic relations next year.
