Rescue 27 people from a fishing boat off the coast of Cyprus


Successfully completed before midnight, rescue operation passengers on a fishing vessel registered in Turkey, which was spotted floating wayward 14 miles north of Akamas.

According to a statement of the Ministry of Defence, on board 27 people aboard, including six women and three children. All landed in the fishing port of Latchi in Paphos, where they were medical examination.

Two women hospitalized with hypothermia at a local hospital, while the others were transferred to refugee hosting space Kofinou, near Nicosia. The refugees were at sea for two days.

According to the announcement, the Larnaca Rescue Centre had received an urgent distress call from the fishing immediately activated the National Rescue Special Research Project "NEARCHOS" by sending two ships to the Port and Marine Police Paphos, which undertook the rescue operation.

At the same time, informed the Medical and Civil Protection to provide care to survivors.



As stated by the police, each of the refugees paid two thousand US dollars to the Turkish trafficker in order to transfer them from the harbor in Alanya in Cyprus.

On the second day of the journey the trafficker left the ship with a second boat, under the pretext that he would return with fuel. Police arrested a 39-year old Syrian, as his accomplice Turkish trafficker.

The refugees are from Syria, apart from a Kurdish family. Many of them speak Greek and as mentioned had lived in Cyprus in the past.

Also they said that they had to Cyprus, because staying here relatives or friends.
