Nearly 135,000 arrivals in Europe, 418 deaths in 2016
Almost 135,000 immigrants and refugees have already arrived this year in Greece and Italy by sea, while 418 have lost their lives during the crossing of the Mediterranean, according to estimates released by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) yesterday.
"The IOM estimates that 134 905 migrants have already crossed the Mediterranean this year. Of these, 125 819 have reached the Greek islands. The others arrived in Italy. media reports indicate that arrivals in Spain in 2016 is less than 100, "according to the statement of the Agency.
According to information of the IOM, arrivals in Greece on a monthly basis fell by 67 415 which were registered in January to 55,633 in February, while the total number of arrivals by sea in Greece since the beginning of 2015 amounts to 970 911 people. The threshold of one million arrivals of refugees and migrants in Greece is expected to be overcome within the next two months.
In late February, the IOM estimated that immigrants and refugees who arrived in Greece and Italy in 2016 was approximately 120,000.
The refugee crisis will be the central issue characterized as critical European Union summit on Monday, March 7 with the participation of Prime Minister of Turkey Ahmet Davutoglu.
