UN: Europe "failed miserably" in the management of refugee crisis
The High Commissioner for Refugees (HCR) UN Filippo Grandi said, in an interview with a German newspaper that Europe "failed miserably" in the host management and hosting of refugees and immigrants who are on the door and urged the European Union to meet.
"With respect to the recording and redistribution (of refugees), cooperation and solidarity at European level have failed miserably," said Grandi in the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) to be released on Friday.
The Italian official of the United Nations, which took office on January 1, also warns against the closure of the borders of European countries which would lead to trapped de facto refugees who have already experienced many hardships in Greece.
"Our fear is that the closure of national borders in Europe will result in hundreds of thousands of refugees remain in Greece" according to excerpts of the interview released on Monday.
"Our message to Europe is:" come to your senses and engage themselves "the situation. But if our help is needed, we will be there "to assist.
The Filippo Grandi refers particularly to the agreement between the 28 Member States concluded in the summer of 2015 on the reallocation of 160,000 refugees, a decision that has since mostly not implemented.
Currently, only 583 "offshoring" have been due to the reluctance of some countries, especially in Eastern Europe.
"What is important is that the system (relocation) to be applied but it will be difficult," according to him.
"At this stage I see great potential in this direction."
According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, more than one million refugees arrived in Europe by sea last year.
Once the majority of the European partners of their turning back, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel shows "courageous" stance, according to Grandi.
