They complain Qatar for inaction in protecting migrant workers

Despite the pressures Qatar has done "almost nothing" to end the abuse of thousands of foreign workers five years after being awarded the organization of the World Cup of 2022, denounced by Amnesty International.

The absence of real reforms "dishonors" Qatar and Fifa, Amnesty adds in a notice published on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of arranging the World Cup in this Gulf emirate on December 2, 2010.

"Despite revealing the shameful conditions facing the majority of workers in construction, the authorities of Qatar have done almost nothing effective to end the years of exploitation" of immigrants, does the organization defending human rights, according to the Athens Press Agency .

Amnesty International calls on the leaders of Fifa and the sponsors of the World Cup to lobby in Doha in order to proceed with reforms before it is too late.

The Mustafa Kadri, a researcher of the NGO, said: "They have done very little to combat the generalized abuse against migrant workers. The reforms proposed by the government does not allow to address the key issues that leave many workers at the mercy of their employers. "

"If you do not take immediate action, every football fan will visit Qatar in 2022 will have to ask if he is certain that it exploits the blood, sweat and tears of migrant workers," he added.

Amnesty International denounces that Qatar has not advanced any change in key areas, particularly in what concerns the right of workers to change jobs, leave the country or join a trade union.

According to the NGO, "limited progress" occurred in only two of the nine areas: payment of wages, safety and health of workers.

Qatar is on record about 1.8 million foreign workers, many of whom are employed in projects that directly or indirectly associated with the construction of infrastructure for the World Cup 2022.

In Qatar in October announced its intention to amend the controversial system "cephalosporin", under which a foreign worker can not leave the country or change jobs without the employer's consent. But the authorities did not specify when it will be implemented such reforms.

Furthermore in November the authorities adopted a system of protection for the payment of wages to ensure that migrant workers, most of them come from South Asia, will be paid on time.
