Eurostat: One in three residents in Greece is in a situation of poverty or social exclusion


One in three residents in Greece-and on average one in four in Europe or considered poor (ie has income less than 60% of median national income), or live in poverty (ie deprived of basic consumer goods, or unable to cope to basic financial obligations) or live in families facing the risk of unemployment.

These are derived from a survey released today by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat) regarding the percentage of Europe's population living in poverty and social exclusion (reference year 2014).

As regards Greece, in poverty is 22.1% of the population in conditions of intra 21.5%, while living in a family facing the risk of unemployment (ie family pretty much any member has "normal work ") 17.2% of the population. The corresponding EU average is 17.2%, 8.9% and 11.1%. In Greece, faced with at least one (or more) of these three problematic situations is 36% of the population (3.8 million. People), while the EU average 24.4% (122 million. People) .

More generally, in a worse situation than Greece, regarding the percentage of the population considered to be in poverty or social exclusion, only Romania (40.2%) and Bulgaria (40.1%). In contrast (with rates below 20%) are the Czech Republic, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland and Denmark.
