Wednesday, September 16, 2015
The White House announced yesterday that the United States prefer to see Russia to engage constructively with the international alliance facing the fighters of the Islamic state in Syria, rather than build its own military presence in the country.
The White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that US President Barack Obama had spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the subject, but will try to do when they "decided that will promote our interests."
The US and Russia are in frequent contact. The American Foreign Minister John Kerry spoke with his Russian counterpart Lavrov Circus phone yesterday, he said the State Department, and was the third conversation of September 5.
The Foreign Minister said that Kerry clarified that the Russian support to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad "threatens to exacerbate and extend the conflict and undermine our common goal to fight extremism unless you also remain focused on finding solution to the conflict in Syria through a genuine political transition. "
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Lavrov has underlined the need for a united front against the terrorist groups in Syria.
