A four year old girl from Syria today drowned off the Turkish coast in the sinking of a vessel trying to reach Greece, two weeks after the death of the small Ailan that became a symbol of the immigrant drama.
The little girl, whose name is not yet known, was found on a beach in Cesme, opposite Chios, reported the government's news agency East.
According to the East, Turkish coastguards managed to save 14 Syrians, of whom eight children who had boarded the same ship bound for Greece.
Earlier this month, photos of a young refugee from Syria, the three year Ailan Perches, found dead on a beach in Bodrum, triggered a global wave of emotion and indignation and forced the EU to partially open its borders to refugees.
For months, more and more immigrants, mostly Syrians, attempting to transit in hazardous conditions in the Aegean from the Turkish coast to reach the Greek islands, the gateway to the European Union.
Last Tuesday, the 22nd immigrants drowned attempting to reach the Kos.
