US Vice President Mike Pens today sought to reassure allies that the Trump government will support NATO and will stand by Europe although considering new ways to cooperate with Russia.
In his first major speech foreign policy of the new government of President Donald Trump, the Pens warned allies that they must pay their fair share to support NATO, noting that many do not have "a clear and credible pathway" to the they do.
The Pens also said that Russia should honor the peace agreements of Minsk and to de-escalate the violence in eastern Ukraine.
"Know this: the United States will continue to consider Russia accountable, even when trying to find new common ground, as you know, the President Trump believes he can be found," said Pens, according to a copy of his speech.
