Thousands of ducks killed today in southwest France in an effort to prevent the spread of the H5N8 strain of the avian influenza virus. I5N8 strain of the virus has recently been detected in neighboring Germany, Slovakia and other European countries. Austria has informed poultry farmers to keep their birds indoors sealed after outbreaks in neighboring Switzerland and Germany.
