The Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Gkarimpasvili surprise today announced his resignation from the office, at a time when the ruling coalition is looking to boost its popularity for the parliamentary elections of 2016.
"I took the decision to resign," I said in a televised address Prime Minister. "All the posts are temporary, only God and the Motherland is eternal. I leave this place today, but I will remain a loyal soldier of my homeland," he added, without giving any explanation for doing so, according to the Athens agency.
The Gkarimpasvili, now 33, took the Georgian prime minister in November 2013 and was then the youngest head of government in Europe. By October 2012, when he took over the Interior Ministry, he was completely unknown. Considered a close ally of the multi-millionaire former Prime Bitzina Ivanisvili that same year won the parliamentary elections ending the long-standing dominance of the United National Movement of former President Mikheil Saakashvili.
