Eurostat: Over 410,000 new asylum applications in the EU in the third quarter of 2015
Over 410,000 new asylum seekers registered in the EU in the third quarter of 2015, of which one in three are Syrian refugee. This results from the Eurostat data released today.
According to Eurostat figures, the Syrians are first in the EU for international protection applications by 34%. Below are Afghans (14%), Iraqis (11%), Albanians (5%) and Pakistanis (3%).
The third quarter of 2015, the number of Syrian and Iraqi asylum seekers than tripled compared to the previous quarter, reaching 138,000 from 44,500. At the same time, doubling the number of Afghan asylum seekers, surpassing the 56,500 requests.
Most asylum applications were recorded in Germany and Hungary (approximately 108,000 new applications in the country, accounting for 26% of all applications in the EU in the third quarter of 2015). Followed by Sweden with about 42,500 applications (10% of total), Italy with 28,500 (7%) and Austria with 27,500 applications (7%).
