The European Commission announced that Germany seemed completely covered legal to reintroduce border controls with Austria yesterday, saying that the move showed the need for EU member states to support the Commission's proposals for Refugees.
"The temporary reintroduction of border controls between Member States is an exception expressly provided for in the Schengen Borders Code and is regulated by it, in situations of crisis," said the commission in a written statement, adding that "the current situation in Germany, at first sight, it seems be a case covered by the regulations. "
The statement added that the executive body of the EU would keep the situation under review and said that the aim was to return to the usual state zero controls between member states of the Schengen zone, "as soon as possible."
Referring to Germany's decision to reintroduce checks after the opening of borders to refugees a week ago, which brought the number of arrivals of refugees soared, the Commission HFC: "The German decision today (Sunday) stresses the urgent need to agree on the measures proposed by the European Commission to be able to admin the refugee crisis. "
Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who spoke with German Chancellor Angkela Merkel shortly before announcing the government decision to restore border controls, pushing the reluctant countries of Eastern Europe to support the Commission's proposals, with which agrees Germany, for the redistribution of asylum seekers in all countries in the EU.
The Juncker spoke also with the leaders of Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia Sunday in an attempt to break the collective resistance to his plans before an emergency meeting of interior ministers of countries in the EU-states, which is scheduled for 16: 00 GMT today (Monday), although diplomats said that the impasse was not lifted until Sunday evening. Talks with representatives of these countries will continue in Brussels today at 09:00 CET, to discuss compromises that formed during the night.
"The free movement of people in (the Treaty) Schengen is a unique symbol of European integration," said the commission in a statement. "However, the other side of the coin is an improved common management of our external borders and more solidarity in the management of the refugee crisis. That is why it is so important the extraordinary conference of interior ministers Monday. We need rapid progress on the Commission proposals now. '
Meanwhile, Chancellor of Austria Werner Faymann will meet with German counterpart Angela Merkel tomorrow, Tuesday to discuss the growing flows of refugees in the EU, according to a statement posted on the website of the Austrian Chancellery yesterday.
The Faiman will be accompanied by Vice-Raincholnt Miterlener and Interior Minister Johanna Miklos-Laitner during his visit to Berlin. According to Faiman it is particularly important to work closely with Germany on the issue.
