Pyongyang: Nuclear weapons are targeting only the US

North Korea said in its first official talks with South Korea today after two years that it would not discuss the issue of its nuclear weapons with Seoul because they target only the United States and not its "brothers" in Korean peninsula.

In the joint announcement, after 11 hours of talks, North Korea pledged to send a large delegation to the Winter Olympics to be held in February in Piedongang but "strongly protests" because Seoul has proposed talks on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula .

Officials from both sides said they agreed to meet again to resolve problems and prevent a conflict, but Pyongyang stressed that disarmament would not be the subject of these debates.

"All of our weapons, including atomic bombs, hydrogen bombs and ballistic missiles, target only the United States, our brothers (the South Koreans), China and Russia," the head of the North Korean negotiators, Ry Sung Guon. "This is not a matter between North and South Korea, and the emergence of this issue would have negative consequences, and we would risk jeopardizing all of today's good achievements," added Rui, who is chair of the Committee on Peaceful Reunification.

A spokesman for the White House Security Council said North Korea's participation in the Olympics would be "an opportunity to see the status of the value of ending its international isolation through nuclear deprivation."

The White House made no comment on the statement that the US is the only target of North Korea's nuclear weapons.

Despite the statements by Rei, the South Korean Reunification ministry noted that it believes that the ties between the two countries and the steps agreed in today's talks could lead to a debate on the definitive resolution of the nuclear issue. "We will work closely with the United States, China, Japan and other neighboring countries in this process," he said in his statement.
