The United States welcomed the end of Iraq's "hideous occupation" by the Islamic State, after the country's Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the defeat of the jihadists after intense three-year clashes.
"The Iraqi report shows that the remnants of the Islamic State's self-proclaimed" caliphate "in Iraq have now been eliminated and that the populations living in these areas have been freed from the violent control of the Islamic State," said Heather Nawert, State Department, in a press release, underlining that this does not mean "the war against terrorism, and even against the Islamic State, in Iraq is over."
