Rescue and Rescue teams in northern California will continue to comb the storms of homes that have been burned down in search of dozens of people who remain missing in the deadliest fires in the state where at least 41 people have lost their lives and thousands of homes have been turned into ashes.
Winds broke further, and milder meteorological conditions helped 11,000 firefighters attempt to control the flames, which last week burned more than 862,000 acres in the state, including the provinces of Napa and Sonoma.
"The situation is much better today than a few days ago," Calistoga Mayor Chris Canning said in a telephone interview with the Reuters news agency, describing the situation in the Napa valley.
Tens of thousands of people who left their homes to save themselves from the flames in Somaoma County and other areas returned after the authorities gave them the green light. However, 34,000 people remain displaced.
Many more firefighters are hoping to return to their homes today, though officials warn that the deaths of the dead may increase. At least 88 people have not given any sign of life alone in the county of Sonoma.
The fire around Kalistoga was controlled by 82% and the southeastern front has been reduced by 72%, as reported by the California Fire Protection and Forest Protection Authority. The fire in the county of Sonoma is the largest that continues to burn, although 68% of it has been restricted.
Firefighters are hoping that by Friday they will be able to put the fire fronts under complete control. More than 969 firefighting vehicles, 30 firefighting aircraft and 73 helicopters are helping businesses.
At least 5,700 homes and businesses were destroyed by the flames that have transformed into ashes an area larger than the city of New York.
The fires in the state are the most deadly in history, with the tragic account overtaking that of the fire at Griffith Park, in 1933 in Los Angeles, with 29 dead.
Most of the 1,863 people whose names were on the lists of missing persons have so far returned to their family members, among them many who left their homes and failed to alert the authorities.
