Amsterdam reinforces security measures following the attacks in Spain

Amsterdam will step up security measures following the bloody terrorist attacks in Catalonia and seeks to limit the queues formed outside the major tourist attractions, the mayor said.

Mayor Emperor van der Lahn, the prosecutor and the forces of the class met with officials of "great tourist attractions to talk about the current terrorist threat," according to the announcement.

"The meeting was organized following the recent attacks in Spain," which killed 16 people, the mayor said in a letter posted on the Amsterdam City Hall website.

With the picturesque canals, great museums and the red lights district, the capital of the Netherlands attracts about 17 million tourists each year, according to a Amsterdam Marketing study in 2016.

"Additional measures can be taken at specific points," said Emperor van der Laan, who primarily wants to limit tails and better protect the people who form them. "We also agreed that representatives of tourist attractions will be trained with the police and rescue services on what to do in the event of a terrorist attack," he added.

Several Amsterdam locations were included in the discussions such as the popular brewery Heineken Experience Center and the Museum Square, where the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum (Dutch National Museum) and the Stedelijk Museum (Museum of Modern Art and Design) are located.

However, the mayor admitted that "he can not rule out the possibility of an attack." "In addition, it is not desirable to take action in any area where an attack could occur." The impact on everyday life would be to an extent unacceptable, "he said.

Rotterdam, the second largest city in the Netherlands, announced on Wednesday the adoption of new security measures, including the imposition of giant garments to prevent access to the city center by a car that can be used to attack.

A 22-year-old Dutchman who was arrested last week as a suspect for involvement in an attack on a Rotterdam concert remained on Wednesday for 14 more days.

The Netherlands has so far escaped the wave of terrorist attacks that recently hit its European neighbors.
