A. Merkel on German arrests in Turkey: We need to react resolutely

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has criticized Turkey today for arresting two other German citizens, stressing that Berlin should react resolutely and possibly revise relations with Ankara.

Under these circumstances, Merkel said it did not believe it would be appropriate to continue further talks with Turkey on its participation in the customs union.

"We have to react decisively," she said in a speech in Nuremberg to entrepreneurs. Following the latest developments, he added, "it may be necessary to rethink" Germany's relations with Turkey, he added.

Earlier, a spokesman for the German government said two German citizens were arrested yesterday in Turkey for "political" reasons.

According to Berlin, a total of 12 Germans are held with "political" motives in Turkey, of which four have dual citizenship.

The most well-known case is that of the German-born Turkish journalist Deniz Yusel, the correspondent in Turkey of the Die Welt newspaper, who today completes 200 days of detention. Yuchel was arrested in late February on charges of spreading "terrorist" propaganda and incitement to hatred, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described him as Kurdish separatist and "German agent".
