An immigration crisis on the 2015 scale could happen again if Germany does not take the necessary measures, said Social Democratic Party (SPD) chairman and candidate for chancellery Martin Schultz today.
"More than a million refugees arrived in Germany in 2015, many of them unchecked, at which time Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the border with Austria, having good humanitarian intentions but unfortunately without any agreement with our partners in Europe" Said the former President of the European Parliament in an interview with the Bild am Sonntag newspaper. "If we do not take action now, this situation could be resumed," he added.
As leader of the SPD, Schultz will face Merkel for the chancellery in parliamentary elections to be held in Germany on September 24th.
In 2015 Germany implemented an "open door" policy for refugees and became one of the main destinations for thousands of people arriving in Europe from the Middle East and North Africa. According to interior ministry data, more than 890,000 refugees entered Germany in 2015 and another 280,000 were added to this number next year. Most of the people who applied for asylum in Germany were Syrians and Afghans.
