US President Donald Trub's decision not to transfer the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem was "prudent," UN spokesman Stefan Dubaric said today.
The spokesman recalled that for the UN, "the status of Jerusalem is an essential problem that can only be solved through political negotiation."
"The Secretary General (Antonio Guterres) hopes that this decision will help facilitate a resumption of a genuine peace process," he continued.
Earlier, President Trab signed a decree stating that the embassy will remain in Tel Aviv for another six months, respecting the "tradition" of its predecessors who have signed such a decision every six months since the end of the 1990s.
Israel expressed disappointment with the decision of the US president, while Palestinian officials called it "a positive and important step".
