About 50,000 German, Dutch and Belgian citizens have today claimed from the Belgian government the "immediate" closure of the two nuclear reactors in Belgium, forming a 90 kilometer cross-border human chain, according to the organizers.
For the time being, authorities have not provided data on the exact number of participants in the mobilization.
The human chain joined the Tihange nuclear power plant (eastern Belgium) and the German city of Heidelberg, passing from Liege (Belgium) and Maastricht to the Netherlands.
The neighboring countries of Belgium (the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany, which recently decided to phase out their dependence on nuclear power) are concerned about the situation and the age of the Tihange stations (east, close to Liege) and Doel (North, near Antwerp) operated by Electrabel.
The organizers of the demonstration are calling for "the immediate termination of the operation of the Tihange 2 and Doel 3 nuclear reactors, which will be operational from the end of 2015 after they had ceased operation for two years because of the thousands of cracks discovered in their buckets.
"The fact that the government allows the operation of these reactors is incomprehensible and unacceptable," the organizers of the demonstration underline on their website.
In addition, they are concerned about the prolongation of the lifetime of some reactors by 10 years, as Prime Minister Charlemagne's government has decided.
