The candidate for his re-election to the presidency of the Islamic Republic on May 19, Hassan Rohani leaves aside his well-meaning and reconcilative tones and goes into the offensive. This was apparent during two televised talks on April 28 and May 5, when the Iranian president attacked his two main rivals in the election race, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Bayer Galibaf Mayor and former Advocate General Ebrahim Raisy.
"Do not talk to us about freedom because it will be disgraceful for you," Rohanai said on May 7 in Uruemih, northwest Iran, in an effort to attract the attention of his rivals, who accuse him of showing tolerance for criticism. The next, speaking in the city of Hamadan, in western Iran, Rohani blames the tax exemptions enjoyed by organizations associated with some candidates: a hint for Ebrahim Raishi, the head of the wealthy charity Astan Quds.
"If you young people stay at home, know that they will pick up walls (...) to separate pavements for women from those intended for men just as they have separated their workplaces," warned Iranian president making this reference to Mohammad Bayer Galibab and his acting as mayor of Tehran since 2005.
"Once again, on 19 May, the Iranian people will show that they do not want those who, for the last thirty-eight years [since the 1979 revolution], all they knew was hanging and sending people to jail," he said. President Roachi addressed this time to Ebrahim Raisy and his past as Advocate General.
