A. Merkel: Europe must take her fortunes into her hands

Europe can no longer rely entirely on its allies, German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned today after the tense NATO summits and G7 last week.

The Chancellor did not name the US President Donald Trab, who criticized most of NATO's countries and refused to clarify whether to comply with the Paris agreement on tackling climate change, but from Munich where he said, the era That Europe could rely entirely on others "is over, to a certain extent".

"I have lived this over the last few days, and I can only say that we Europeans really have to take our fortunes in our hands - of course with friendly feelings for the United States, for Britain and being good neighbors where this is With other countries, even with Russia, but we must know that we must fight for our own sake, for our fate as Europeans, "he added.

Referring to France, Merkel wished good luck to the new president, Emmanuel Makron, stressing: "Where Germany can help, it will help because Germany can only do well if Europe is doing well."

At the two-day G7 summit in Italy, Trab was confronted by the leaders of Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Canada and Japan on many issues. Some European diplomats felt disheartened as they had to deal again with issues that they hoped had been settled for a long time. At the end of the session Trab supported the proposal to fight protectionism, but refused to adopt the climate deal, saying it needed more time to decide.
