A dead man in Times Square, New York, when a car hit pedestrians

A high-speed passenger car pulled a group of pedestrians on the sidewalk of lively Times Square, in the heart of New York, killing a man and wounding 19 others, according to eyewitnesses and the city's fire brigade.

The police reported that this episode does not seem to be related to terrorism. Security officials said the FBI is working with the New York police to clear up the case.

Hundreds of thousands of people, many of them tourists from all over the world, spend every day from this busy Manhattan area, the heart of Broadway.

The eyewitnesses said the Red Sedan, the Honda brand, went to the opposite traffic and climbed onto the sidewalk, dragging the pedestrians. The vehicle hit a pillar and stopped at the junction of the 45th Street with Broadway. The driver was released and detained.

In pictures broadcast from US television networks, a man wearing a dark t-shirt can be seen on a patrol. According to the local media, he is a 26-year-old from the Bronx.

A woman who went shopping with her mother saw the car moving fast on the sidewalk. "I've been shocked by all of them," she said at the Reuters news agency.
